Round 3 – Pick 94

David Long, CB, Michigan

With their second third round pick, Jacksonville can finally flip to the defensive side of the ball. A unit with very little holes, struggled to maintain the standards they set for themselves in 2017. The group as a whole struggled and will need to bounce back in a hurry.

One area that the Jaguars can point to that was lost between 2017 and 2018 is at slot corner. Their previous player Aaron Colvin left the team in free agency. They struggled to find someone to fill that void. Jacksonville increasingly put safeties into that role with little success. Finding a successor for Colvin would be key.

David Long of Michigan is that guy. Long is a bit undersized but plays bigger than he is listed. His best role will be in the slot, where he can use his agility to mirror and match some of the NFL’s shiftiest receivers. Long may not be an overly exciting athlete but he is technically sound and not afraid to mix it up around the line of scrimmage.

There are areas of improvement for the former Wolverine. He’ll need to sure up his tackling if he is expecting to be an de facto starter in that nickle role. With Jalen Ramsey teaching him, that toughness and tackling should not be a problem. Long would be a great addition to an already super talented secondary.
