With a new defensive coordinator comes a new scheme. The Chiefs are switching from from a 3-4 scheme to a 4-3. Don’t read too much into that, but you still need to be aware of it because it changes some players roles on this defense.

It seems a combination of Dorian O’Daniel, Reggie Ragland and Anthony Hitchens could be what the team will roll with next season. The team liked what they saw from O’Daniel this past season and Hitchens isn’t going anywhere. One, because his tape from his time in a Dallas Cowboys uniform is not what the Chiefs got last year and secondly because his contract has $17 million in dead money this upcoming season. They’re only out would be after the 2019 season.

The odd man out in the new scheme will be be Ragland because he doesn’t fit the new scheme. Back when Ragland was in Buffalo part of the reason he was traded was because he didn’t fit the Bills 4-3 alignment.

The Chiefs roster evaluation on the defensive side of the ball is still very fluid at this point in the offseason, but with free agency starting March 13 and the draft at the end of April decisions will be made in the near future.

The offensive side of the ball is the least of the teams worries aside from some depth at certain positions, but with the NFL’s MVP under center the Chiefs are going to try to do everything in their power to get this team the help it needs to win a Super Bowl while Mahomes is still on his rookie deal.
