1. New Orleans Saints

It’s pretty easy to see why Mathieu and the Saints could make a great match this offseason. First, it’s clear that New Orleans wants to do everything they can to give Drew Brees another chance to win a Super Bowl. Making their defense as dominant as their offense would be a great way to ensure a deep postseason run.

Mathieu also happens to be a New Orleans native who played his college football at LSU. He clearly has a strong affinity for the area. It might even be possible to convince him to take a hometown discount to play for his hometown team. The Saints front office shouldn’t count on that, but it’s something that could work out in their favor.

On the field, Mathieu would be a massive upgrade over Marcus Williams at the free safety spot. Combining him with Vonn Bell would give Sean Payton and his coaching staff one of the best safety duos in the league. Having two safeties capable of supporting the run defense could also pay big dividends for the Saints.

In some way this idea might be a little bit too sentimental to work, but it passes all the logical tests as well. Mathieu wants to play for a winner in a warm client. The Saints are clearly Super Bowl contenders and it doesn’t get much hotter than Louisiana. Don’t be shocked if the Honey Badger goes home this offseason.
