Guard

The Bears’ offensive line was one of the bigger strengths of the team last year. They were able to open running lanes and did a good job protecting their young quarterback. One of the keys to their success was the relative health of the group.

This brings us to Kyle Long, who has had major injury issues over the past three years. Last year he started just eight games, nine the year before and another eight in 2016. His inability to remain healthy makes having good offensive line depth important.

Bryan Witzmann and Eric Kush both saw action this past year. Witzmann took over for Long when he was forced out due to injury. He made a seamless transition and helped the Bears offense continue to flow.

Long is a top-flight player when on the field, but it’s hard to feel comfortable that the will be available. Witzmann is a free agent and the Bears should work hard to bring him back.

Chicago does have some flexibility with Cody Whitehair, who has experience playing guard. This means the Bears could bring in a backup center to help their depth. Either way, they need to be prepared to fill in or take over for Long at some point during the season.
