National Player of the Year rankings: Will injury cost Zion Williamson?
By Jacob Lane
2. Markus Howard – Marquette
This week:
- Butler: 28 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists
- Providence: 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists
Season stats: 25.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 4 apg
It still amazes me that with the type of scoring season Marquette guard, Markus Howard, has put together that he is still only sixth in the country in points per game. Maybe I’m crazy, or maybe not, but it has felt like every time I’ve tuned into a Marquette game or looked at box scores he’s dropped 40-plus points and five assists.
Howard had a bit of a “down” week (if you can even call it that) scoring just 14 points in the team’s second game of the week against Providence, after dropping 28 on Wednesday against Butler. Howard has scored 20-plus points an incredible 18 times this season, while scoring 30-plus on eight different occasions, and has made everyone his team look much better than what they really are.
He’s gotten a lot of help from Sam Hauser and Sacar Amin, but it is without question the Markus Howard show everytime Marquette takes the floor. His ability to score 40 on any given night has also made Marquette basketball appointment viewing television.
