Round 4: Bobby Evans

Russell Okung is still playing at a high level for the Chargers, but they can’t expect him to protect Rivers’ blind side forever. Finding a guy who could eventually develop into a starting left tackle in the fourth round would be a real coup for the front office.

Evans isn’t a perfect prospect, but there are a lot of things to like about his college film. When he was locked in for the Sooners he was almost as good as any tackle in college football. Evans flashes the athleticism to overwhelm opposing defensive linemen.

The coaching staff that drafts him will have to work with him on consistency before they hand him a starting position in the NFL. His motor didn’t always run hot for the Sooners. That’s why he’s got a chance to be available in round four as opposed to hearing his name called on day one.

We’re inclined to think he’ll mature and reach his full potential. Given Rivers’ lack of mobility at the quarterback position, the Chargers can’t afford to be caught short of quality pass blockers. Evans might not be needed to play a lot of snaps in 2019, but he’d be a terrific insurance policy behind Okung. Los Angeles can’t afford to enter the regular season without another quality option at tackle.
