Round 6 – Pick 188

Ricky Walker, DL, Virginia Tech

The Chiefs have some decisions to make up the middle. Chris Jones is headed towards an extension and deservidly so. Derrick Nnadi showed he can be a contributing piece to the run defense up the middle, but after that there’s not much else.

Allen Bailey is a free agent this summer and it’s a possibility the team may cut Xavier Williams this off season as well to create more cap space. A late round pick spent on some help up the middle might be the way to go.

Ricky Walker was one of five returning starters for the Virginia Tech defense and recorded 12.5 tackles for loss and four and a half sacks his junior year. He’s not the biggest interior lineman but he has a balanced skill set. He’s a decent pass rusher and can hold his own against the run.

Hopefully the Chiefs can find a diamond in the rough with Walker.

Round 7 – Pick 194

Lamont Gaillard, C, Georgia

With the reality being that the Chiefs will likely let Mitch Morse walk in free agency the Chiefs will need to add some depth among in interior.

Lamont Gaillard was a key cog in a Georgia offensive line that was among the best in college the last couple seasons. He can work in space although probably not as well as Morse could but is solid in both run and pass blocking.

Given the litany of injuries the Chiefs have suffered to their offensive line the last couple seasons it’s not unreasonable to say that he could be somewhat important to the team down the road.

The Chiefs were close to a Super Bowl last season and should be one of the favorites to get to the big game next season. Free agency will dictate a lot of the teams plans come April, but with the limited cap space the Chiefs have the draft will probably be their primary focus this off season.
