New Orleans Saints free agency 2019: Top 5 targets
By Nick Villano
Tyrell Williams
On paper, wide receiver is not a position the Saints need help with, but with multiple injuries the team was relying on surprising names in the playoffs. The injuries put the brakes on the offense, and put too much on Michael Thomas to carry the load. Ted Ginn Jr. was the player to help take defenders off Thomas, but he can’t stay on the field, either.
The Saints could decide to move on from Ginn and replace him with one of the many second- and third receiving options on the market. There are no great receivers available this season, with Golden Tate as the top target at the position, but there are many interesting names. The one that could fit the Saints is Tyrell Williams.
It’s been two years since Williams broke the 1,000-yard mark, but if the Saints find new ways to use him, he could hit those marks again. He can still take the top off of defenses, despite a down year in 2018. He averages 15.9 yards per reception and scored five touchdowns in the Los Angeles Chargers offense.
The Saints would love Tate to play that role, but some other team is going to overpay him. The Saints will be looking to wade into much cheaper waters when it comes to the wide receiver market. Williams has the skills to work in the Saints offense, especially playing Ginn’s role, so the Saints should make the move to sign him.
