Round 3 – Chase Winovich, DL, Michigan

Clay Matthews is almost certainly going to leave the Packers in free agency. It only makes sense that Green Bay will try to draft someone to fill his shoes in this year’s draft. Chase Winovich looks and plays like the former Southern Cal star.

Winovich isn’t the most talented edge guy in this draft, but he’s got the right attitude to thrive in a city like Green Bay. He plays the game with a blue-collar edge that will appeal strongly to Packers fans. He never gives up on plays. That’s a characteristic that will play well on cold, snowy days up in Wisconsin.

That’s not to say that Winovich isn’t capable of making big plays. He’s a guy who can get to the quarterback against elite offensive tackles. Winovich doesn’t blow past those type of guys with his first move, but his ability to counter a tackle’s initial set is a big time skill. No quarterback can sit back and hold the ball forever if Winovich is tasked with bringing him down.

Drafting Winovich might not give Green Bay an immediate starter at defensive end, but he’s a guy who can help change the culture of the team’s front seven. He simply won’t let anyone else quit on a play. Selecting a guy who can help the dressing room, pass rush and special teams as a rookie is a nice call in the third round.
