Dean Ambrose was planning to leave the WWE over creative differences, but a potential Shield reunion may keep him with the company.

Nothing about Dean Ambrose’s alleged departure from WWE after WrestleMania has been normal. Now it seems his departure may be nixed entirely. Roman Reigns’ impending return to the ring may keep The Lunatic Fringe with the biggest wrestling promotion in the world for the foreseeable future.

Originally, the announced plan called for Ambrose to stop appearing for WWE after his current contract expires in April. The company even took the unprecedented step to announce his exit in advance. Fan opinion was split over whether or not that step was designed to curb an awkward CM Punk-style exit or a sure-fire signal that Ambrose leaving was a work.

We may never get the true answer to that question, but signs are definitely pointing to Ambrose extending his run with the company. WWE is currently advertising the former Shield member for events during the month of May. It’s possible that’s an oversight by the company, but that’s not very likely given Ambrose’s status inside WWE.

The most likely explanation for the change in plans is Reigns’ recent announcement that he’ll return to the ring. Thankfully, The Big Dog’s leukemia is now in remission which means he can begin to train again. Even so, WWE officials might want to play it safe with his return to the active roster.

The easiest way to save wear and tear on Reigns is to allow him to compete in tag-team action on a regular basis. That makes a relaunch of The Shield a terrific creative and logistical plan for the WWE. Obviously, that can’t happen without Ambrose.

You’d imagine that Ambrose would find it hard to turn that creative opportunity down. The Shield is a gimmick that is clearly over with fans and with the three men involved. It’s also a very well established money-maker. Finances allegedly weren’t the driving force behind Ambrose’s decision to leave the company but a little extra money in his pocket surely wouldn’t hurt.

It’s also possible that Reigns went directly to Ambrose to ask him to reconsider. The two may not be best friends as their on-screen characters are portrayed, but they certainly have some type of personal relationship. Ambrose may have found it very difficult to turn his colleague in need down.

The end result will likely be Ambrose extending his run with the WWE for an undetermined amount of time to let a new Shield angle play out. Fans of the Lunatic Fringe shouldn’t assume he’s going to remain a fixture on the roster for years to come, but his exit should no longer be considered imminent.
