Safety

Last year, the Los Angeles Rams used the franchise tag to keep the versatile safety LaMarcus Joyner in the mix. Joyner had a solid year, but didn’t live up to his price tag. He’s now expected to hit the open market and land with a new team.

John Johnson has established himself as one of the starting safeties but another needs to be found. The current roster doesn’t provide many options. Of the younger players Blake Countess possesses some upside.

It’s possible that aging cornerback Aqib Talib might be willing to make a position change. We’ve seen several top-tier cornerbacks move to safety late in their career.

The free agent market has some good fits should the Rams make this position a priority. Of the free agents, Adrian Amos might have the highest price tag. He has enjoyed a strong two-year run with the Chicago Bears.

Amos isn’t known as a playmaker, but more as someone who provides steady play. Tyrann Mathieu is more of a playmaker and would fit in nicely with the Rams win-now agenda.

The 2019 draft is light on stars at this position, but there’s enough depth where a starter could be found with one of the Rams third round picks.
