Guard

Long-time Ram Rodger Saffold is a free agent and one the team would like to have back. Saffold has been a key cog within the Rams offensive line for many years. He’s a hard-nosed player who can set the tone for the entire offense.

However, Saffold is one of several Rams offensive linemen who are getting older. Andrew Whitworth and John Sullivan are both at the back end of their career.

The Rams drafted Joseph Noteboom in the third round last year with the aging offensive line in mind. He’s projected as more of a tackle, but could potentially see time at guard. He maybe forced into that position should the Rams fail to bring Saffold back.

As the roster stands, Austin Blythe has one of the starting guard spots but that should be open to competition. Losing Saffold could force the Rams to bring in as many as three new interior offensive linemen.

Quinton Spain and John Miller are two free agent options that would make sense. Both have starting experience with some success. The NFL draft offers players like Oklahoma’s Cody Ford and Penn State’s Connor McGovern.

Obviously, the best case scenario for the Rams would be to find a way to get Saffold back into the fold. He’s a veteran leader who would be worth the price tag.
