Round 3: Tommy Sweeney

Matthew Stafford has a lot of talent to throw to at wide receiver, but he could use a tight end who can provide him a real safety blanket. Sweeney doesn’t have the speed to emerge as a deep threat, but he’s got a chance to develop into one of the most complete tight ends in this class.

Sweeney strikes us a guy who Patricia will really love. He is willing to do all of the dirty work required from a tight end. He’s not a great blocker at this point in his career, but he’s willing to throw his body around in the run game. Any NFL coaching staff will like their chances to turn him into a positive force as an in-line blocker.

In the passing game, there’s a ton to like. He didn’t benefit from quality quarterback play at Boston College, but he ran really good routes in a system that features a lot of NFL concepts. Combine that with his demonstrated ability to make catches in traffic and you’ve got a recipe for a solid starter.

There are more dynamic tight ends in this draft, but Sweeney’s floor is exceptionally high. It’s easy to envision him blossoming into an above average starter early in his professional career. The BC product would be a nice grab for Detroit on Day Three.
