In the battle of West London, Chelsea face Fulham at Craven Cottage to see who comes out on top in the battle of the rich.

Both teams seemed to have similar fortunes until very recently. A lack of real unity within the club hierarchy, questions about the manager, players not pulling their weight, inconsistent performances, a leaky defense, you wouldn’t be too far off if you had guessed that the two teams were side by side in the table.

Unfortunately for Fulham, they find themselves languishing in 20th. This was the season they were to take the Premier League by storm, playing slick football, and staking their claim to be a part of the “best of the rest” in the Premier League. Unfortunately, a failed transfer policy, a lack of cohesion and leaders means they probably will end up back were they came from: the Championship.

With Claudio Ranieri having departed, former player Scott Parker has been named caretaker manager, which in itself could be a blessing in disguise. There have been plenty of teams that have rallied around a key figure that rises from within. Parker knows the ethos of the club better than most, and could re-instill a spirit within this crop of players that could see the tide turn in their favour. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have much time to work with and with Chelsea to visit, doesn’t have the easiest of matches to begin with.

Elsewhere across west London, Chelsea have rallied since their collapse at the Etihad. Performances have picked up, but more importantly there is a resilience and defiance to Chelsea’s play again. Out of the blue, leaders have emerged on the field, and the team has fallen behind manager Maurizio Sarri’s vision. The important thing for them now is consistency. They have to consolidate their recent performances with continued results in order to make their way up the table. They still lie only in sixth, and have to win this game if they are to keep up with Manchester United and Arsenal ahead of them.
