Round 4 – Pick 107

Isaiah Johnson, CB, Houston

Finally the picks and value lined up for Tampa Bay to get a corner. Unlike most I do not expect them to take one super high. This is a team that invested two top-64 picks on corners only a year ago. They also still have former first round pick Vernon Hargreaves on the roster as of now. Corner is a position of need but it is a position that needs to be developed.

Isaiah Johnson is a player worthy of development for this team. Like Carlton Davis from a year ago, Johnson is a long corner who has good speed. Unlike Davis, Johnson has to work on his technique at the line of scrimmage. Despite excellent length at 6-foot-2 he’s been sloppy playing press, though he’s able to make up for it with solid speed and quick hips. If a team can develop his game there is a lot to like. He is a former wide receiver who should grow into a player with good ball skills. This is more of a long-term pick but can contribute in the right defenses.

With Brent Grimes out the door, Tampa may kick the tires on some free agents this offseason. The best route would be bring in a veteran to help aid in all the youth in the corner room. Arians and new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles understand the importance of corner play to a defense that should be able to get to the quarterback.
