Few players have endured as tumultuous of a college career as BYU’s Sione Takitaki, but don’t expect that to cause him to fall out of the first few rounds on draft day.

Takitaki (maybe the best name in the draft?) was kicked off the team briefly during his freshman season, suspended several times following, then took a year off from football after getting married to help get his life back on the right track. It seemed to work wonders, as Takitaki returned to the field the last two seasons for the Cougars as its most important player on defense, including becoming team captain during his senior year.

Takitaki has excellent athleticism, which he was able to display during the Combine (4.63 4o-yard dash, 37-inch vertical), and is the type of player who plays like his hair is on fire. He’s a bit of an “all-or-nothing” defender who can sometimes take himself out of a play because of his over-aggressiveness, but there’s no denying his desire and tenacity to try and make every play on the field.

The Patriots have invested in the linebacker position somewhat heavily over the last several drafts but Takitaki seems like just the type of player they would really like and at worst, he can become a valuable special teams contributor until he’s ready to start full-time.
