Round 3 – Pick 65

Hakeem Butler, WR, Iowa State

With so much time until the NFL draft, this is one of those picks that may look foolish in April. As of now though, Iowa State’s Hakeem Butler would be a great grab for the Cardinals atop the third round. Last year’s second round pick Christian Kirk looked to be a piece of the future before an injury derailed his season. With Larry Fitzgerald hanging on by a thread, Arizona will need another weapon to help their young quarterback. Butler is that guy.

The Iowa State star averaged an absurd 22 yards per catch this past season. In an offense that featured basically himself and running back David Montgomery, Butler was a man among boys. Standing at 6-foot-6 he has the prototypical size of a number one option at receiver. He plays like that as well, winning all over the field but making his money in moving the chains and in the red zone. Butler is not a big-lumbering receiver either. This past season he showed a nuanced route tree, an ability to bend and make dramatic cuts and incredible run after the catch ability. Butler give Rosen the compliment to Kirk’s quick twitch over the middle ability.

There is a chance Butler is long gone by this point in the draft. This is a strong wide receiver group with plenty of players who could claim the top spot. For Butler it will come down to testing. The tape is there that shows he is a legitimate weapon for any offense. If he can come out and run a good 40 and agility drills, his name will sky rocket up boards.
