Round 2 – Pick 36

D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss

This is where the San Francisco draft will get interesting. There are two glaring needs that can be addressed in this spot; corner and wide receiver. In this iteration of the mock draft, the top three corners were off the board. That left only Georgia’s Deandre Baker sitting there. With San Francisco’s love of big and long corners, Baker did not seem to be the guy. The depth of the wide receiver class however, pushed a talented player right into the 49ers lap.

D.K. Metcalf would be the perfect compliment to the weapons already in place and add to what is shaping up to be a dynamic offense in 2019. The team already has star tight end George Kittle. He works well with slot receiver Dante Pettis, who came on late before being injured, and speedster Marquise Goodwin. Metcalf gives them an alpha receiver who can dominate the game no matter where he lines up.

The 6-foot-3 receiver is the type of talent that simply should not get to the second round. He may fall due to the neck injury that ended his 2018 season. On tape he pops every time you watch the Rebels offense. His ability to high points balls, and win at the catch point may be the best in this class and that is saying something. Players of his size should not be that quick and fast. He has the body and play style of a true number one receiver. He may need to work on his route tree due to Ole Miss’ reluctance to throw anything more than a slant, or go route.

However, with some quality NFL coaching Metcalf has the makings of a dominant receiver in the NFL. His tape is outstanding and his ceiling is sky high especially on an offense like San Francisco’s that can compliment his best attributes.
