Round 6 – Pick 178

Marquise Blair, S, Utah

A big problem for the 49ers, outside of their starting quarterback and running back getting injured, was the play of their defensive backfield. There are good pieces in place but the sum of the whole has not equaled the talent of the parts. Adding talent should be a priority for John Lynch and company in this draft. They already grabbed a 49ers style corner earlier in Joejuan Williams and now Lynch can go to his old position and grab a safety. They have Adrian Colbert who looks to be a steal but there should be competition next to him.

An underappreciated player is Marquise Blair from Utah. Blair is the type of safety who can help erase mistakes from the aggressive corners in San Francisco. He’s not the biggest or most physical but he has shown the ability to  play the middle of the field and get sideline to sideline. That skill set is hard to find in the NFL and would make Blair a great piece for an up and coming 49ers defense.

Round 6 – Pick 213

Daniel Wise, DT, Kansas

Speaking of a pick to help with depth, the San Francisco 49ers defensive line could use some. They have talent across the board with Deforest Buckner, Arik Armstead, and Soloman Thomas. Those are three players that can be strong interior presence in different scenarios. What they may look to add, especially with first round pick Josh Allen now in the mix, is another defensive tackle. If you watched coverage of the East-West Shrine All Star Game you know Wise by now.

Wise was dominant in Florida and caught the eyes of a lot of draft twitter. Wise was a wrecking ball for opponent’s offenses when he was at Kansas as well. For San Francisco he would be a great rotational piece and allow them to continue with the positional versatility that they have with Armstead and Thomas.

Round 7 – No Pick

The 49ers traded this pick in 2016 to the Chiefs for wide receiver Rod Streater.
