Round 5 – No Pick

Lost the pick in the swap with the Raiders to acquire Kelechi Osemele

Round 6 – Pick 196

Benny Snell, RB, Kentucky

Looking at the move for Kelechi Osemele and the offense Adam Gase has run in the past, the Jets are looking to play some power football. Improving their running game will go a long way in helping Sam Darnold grow. An idea prospect for that type of offense is Kentucky running back Benny Snell. Like his teammate Josh Allen who was drafted in the first round, Snell is attributed with a massive turn around for Kentucky football. While Allen was the defensive leader, Snell was the team’s identity.

Snell is not an elite athlete for the running back position. What he is though is a powerful runner who makes smart decisions following blockers and has the juice to turn two-yard runs into six-yard runs. He’s also an ideal locker room guy, something Gase values immensely.

Even if the Jets were to land Le’Veon Bell or Tevin Coleman, a pick like Snell to add depth and chemistry would fit in New York.

Round 7 – Pick 217

Anthony Nelson, EDGE, Iowa

It was unintentional to draft two pairs of teammates for the Jets. It just happened to work out that these guys matched the profile for what New York is looking for while filling needs. Anthony Nelson of Iowa joins his former teammate Amani Hooker in New York with this draft.

Nelson, like the other players mentioned, is a high IQ player who is considered a great teammate by many. For the Hawkeyes he was a consistently feared edge rusher. On tape he shows a wide array of pass rush moves and the ability to win the edge in the run game. He showed that there is decent athleticism at the combine with his sub 7-second three cone and 4.23 20 yard shuttle. His lack of bend was a concern entering Indianapolis.

He likely goes much higher in the draft than this. It’s a deep edge group though and teams fall in love with elite athletes at the positoin. A technician like Nelson who is a solid though ont elite athlete has a tendency to fall. His character, motor and play style mesh really well with New York’s identity.
