4. Rashan Gary

The Michigan coaching staff didn’t do Gary any favors during his Wolverines’ career. They played him inside for the majority of his collegiate snaps. That limited his ability to really show his speed. He was a good defensive tackle, but he projects to be a great defensive end at the next level.

In fairness to Jim Harbaugh and his staff, Gary was the most productive interior lineman they had to work with. Playing him inside was probably best for the team, but it didn’t help Gary’s draft stock in the slightest. His lack of tape at defensive end is probably going to prevent him from going as high as his athleticism should allow.

The fact that he ran a 4.58 at the Combine is impressive for any defensive lineman. Combine that with his measurements of 6-foot-4 and 277 pounds and it’s easy to see why NFL coaches would be intrigued. If an NFL team can harness his physical ability, they’ll have a Pro Bowler on their hands.

Ironically, Gary’s similarity to Solomon Thomas might prevent him from going to San Francisco. Thomas also came into the draft with a reputation as a big defensive end with exceptional speed from the edge. His inability to make a big impact for the ‘Niners might sour them on taking Gary.
