4. Trade (Or Somehow Part Ways With) OF Kole Calhoun

This move looks like one for the trade deadline, depending on the progress of prospects Jo Adell and Jahmai Jones. Justin Upton could also be moved from left to right field if needed, with Jarrett Parker and/or Peter Bourjos taking over left field (however dismally) for the Angels.

Kole Calhoun won a Gold Glove in 2015, but advanced metrics are not complementary of his defense. He hit 19 home runs for the second straight season last year, and that was his fifth-straight campaign with at least 17 homers. But his batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS (obviously) are all going the wrong direction, and it’s worth wondering if 2018 (.208/.283/.369 slash-line) is even the bottom there.

Calhoun is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract at $10.5 million, with a $14 million club option for 2020 ($1 million buyout). That makes him a trade candidate, or if he really struggles early in the season, a decision to designate him for assignment may be on the table. In any case, Calhoun should not be long for the Angels’ outfield.
