Round 5 – Pick 164

Tyler Roemer, T, San Diego State

The Colts have a ton of picks and not many glaring needs. A smart front office, like the one Ballard is running, will look at future needs towards the end of the draft. One spot where that is evident is at offensive tackle. Braden Smith played well as a rookie at right tackle. Former first-round pick Anthony Castonzo looked excellent now that he has some help alongside of him. Castonzo, however, is going to be 31 when the season kicks off. His contract also expires next year. Finding a cheap replacement in Round 5 would be excellent use of resources.

Tyler Roemer of San Diego State is an interesting developmental tackle prospect. Possessing great size and lightning-quick feet, he has the tools that will get him drafted. Despite some poor tape where he shows a lack of anchor and rudimentary hand usage, Roemer’s size and athleticism show that he has the traits to be a starter down the road.

Round 6 – Pick 199

Deshaun Davis, LB, Auburn

Darius Leonard is the future at linebacker for the Colts. Along with his running mate Anthony Walker, the Colts have two athletic linebackers to focus the defense around. Deshaun Davis of Auburn would give them a talented addition. Davis is not the athlete that the other two are. What he does well, though, is play the run and stuff gaps. At Auburn it was clear that he is fast enough to play the run and is super aggressive. Davis offers the Colts an option as a short-down linebacker when they eventually put three on the field. He will never be a star, but this would be a great pick.

Round 7 – Pick 240

Malik Gant, S, Marshall

Marshall safety Malik Grant is a prospect that makes sense for plenty of teams in the last round. His skills on tape pop. He is an excellent box safety who tackles like a linebacker despite having a smaller frame. Even in man coverage, he showed that he has some chops. With the NFL increasingly going to three-safety looks, Gant can find a role on a team. Given his athleticism, he can also be an aid on special teams until he grows into a more productive role. Gant would give the Colts two box safeties, with the earlier pick of Abram paired with Malik Hooker on the back end.
