Ranking every coach in the 2019 NCAA Tournament
68. Tony Benford, LSU*
The last spot comes with a bit of an asterisk since LSU suspended their brilliant coach, Will Wade, for getting caught up in the FBI’s recruiting probe. Wade would have landed much higher on this list, but LSU is being coached by interim Tony Benford, whose prior coaching experience consists of a 62-95 run at North Texas.
67. Joe Golding, Abilene Christian
Golding has been at the helm at Abilene Christian for the past seven years, and he has compiled a 114-127 record during his tenure. After making the CIT a year ago, Golding got the Wildcats into the NCAA Tournament on the strength of a 27 win campaign that led to a Southland Conference Tournament title.
66. Byron Smith, Prairie View A&M
Another young coach, Smith has only been on the job at Prairie View for four years, putting together a 57-56 record at the helm of the SWAC Champions. Prior to becoming the permanent head coach, Smith served as an assistant for the Panthers for three and a half years.
65. David Richman, North Dakota State
Richman took North Dakota State to the NCAA Tournament in his first year on the job but failed to advance and the Bison missed the field in the next three years. North Dakota State won the Summit League this year to make their second trip to March Madness under Richman, who has compiled a 94-66 record.
