5 mid-majors that could make a Final Four run
Nevada Wolfpack (29-4, No. 7 Seed)
The Nevada Wolfpack were a miracle Loyola-Chicago run away from being the mid-major team that made the run to the Final Four a year ago. All Nevada did in the year between was bring back their three-headed monster of Jordan Caroline, Cody, and Caleb Martin; and then added a top-20 consensus recruit in big man Jordan Brown. The Wolfpack made the most of their second chance, amassing a 29-4 record on the season and winning a share of the Mountain West Conference regular-season title.
Eric Musselman has his most talented roster — outside of his stints in the NBA — and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament could set him up to capitalize in a big way monetarily (read: UCLA opening). Yet, before Musselman can get on even ground with some of the game’s greatest coaches, he needs to show that what Nevada did a season ago was no fluke.
The possibility of having to take down Michigan and Texas Tech along the way to Minneapolis could be the route that leads quickest to Westwood. The talent is there and if the Wolfpack can get on another hot streak, then they could be the last mid-major team standing in the end.
