Round 4 – Pick 121

Will Harris, S, Boston College

If the NFL postseason and subsequent offseason taught us anything, it’s that the safety position may have been undervalued in the past. We saw the Chargers roll out all the safeties on their roster to stop the dominant Ravens rushing attack. Teams that can employ a variety of types of players at safety are able to match up even the most complex of offenses. It is important for defenses to have matchup players for opposing offenses, and safeties are the best example of that.

Right now the Titans only have three safeties on their roster. The best of the bunch is the criminally underrated Kevin Byard, who still can get better. He is now paired with Kenny Vaccaro after Tennessee signed him to a four year deal earlier in the offseason. The remaining safety, Dane Cruikshank, is entering his second year after getting drafted in the fifth round in 2018.

That depth chart could use another player and, in this draft, that is Boston College’s Will Harris. An experienced member of a very strong secondary, Harris fits well as the third or fourth safety for this team. His ability to play deep in coverage can let the Titans bring Byard and Vaccaro near the line of scrimmage where their ball skills can shine. Harris also showed an elite athleticism at the combine that can take away the deep parts of the field.

Tennessee needs upgrades in the secondary, even though they have spent considerable money on the position in the past. Harris allows them to play multiple defensive looks and is a good pairing with fellow youngster Cruikshank, who is at his best in the slot and near the line of scrimmage.
