Round 1 – Pick 23

Erik McCoy, IOL, Texas A&M

Very few teams enter the draft with as glaring needs as the Texans have along their offensive line. This unit is trouble and it is one reason that Deshaun Watson was sacked an NFL most 62 times last year. They really have no choice but to select some type of offensive lineman in the first round. It would be a disservice to their franchise quarterback if they selected any other position.

In this mock draft the top ranked offensive lineman is Texas A&M center/guard Erik McCoy. A massive riser throughout the draft process, McCoy would be a great fit up front for the Texans. His natural position is center, where Houston’s best offensive lineman Nick Martin currently plays. Both players offer versatility to guard if this was to be the pick.

McCoy is a long-time starter for the Aggies, with all but two of those games coming at center. He may not be the longest offensive lineman but he is at his best when he gets inside the bodies of other players. There are offensive lineman who win with length but that is not McCoy’s game. He is able to get chest to chest with defensive lineman and steer them in any direction. There are not many guys in this draft that can win one-on-one as consistently as McCoy. Against the best prospects like Alabama’s Quinnen Williams, he shined. This would be a great grab for Houston to pair with Nick Martin inside and help Watson from running for his life.
