Round 2 – Pick 54

Kaleb McGary, T, Washington

It is rare to see a team address the simliar area of the field with back-to-back picks. That is what the Texans should do to address their offensive line. After grabbing Erik McCoy with the first pick, following him up with Washington’s Kaleb McGary, would be a game-changing pick.

Before diving into why this pick makes sense for the Texans it is important to look at McGary the prospect. He is a massive 6-foot-6 offensive tackle who started for over three years with the Huskies. He is a much better run blocker than pass blocker. Despite his massive frame, he is short-armed. That means he needs to have excellent feet to excel at pass blocking. That part of his game is a work in progress. Good news is that his agility testing showed that he has the ability to move quickly and his footwork can be improved with good coaching. In a tackle class that has talent at the top but a drastic fall-off McGary is at the bottom of the upper tier before that fall off and a great grab for Houston.

Right now the Texans are set to start Julie’n Davenport and Martinas Rankin, or Seantrel Henderson at offensive tackle. Those players were highly thought of when they were younger, or still may be. However, they are not the answer. Making this a four way competition for the two spots would benefit Houston and allow them to let the cream rise to the top.

Other positions that could be addressed here would be safety(more coming), running back or tight end. The depth of the tight end class, and the team having four already on the roster pushed that need down the board. At running back, this is a deep class but lacks top-end talent. It is best to sit patiently for a running back to fall into their laps.
