Round 2 – Pick 60

Michael Deiter, T, Wisconsin

The offensive tackle position for the Chargers have been a sore spot for the team for what seems like a decade. Currently it is manned by Russell Okung and Sam Tevi. It is safe to say that the team could use an upgrade at the position. After the first three offensive tackles there is a drastic fall off. Los Angeles was not in the position to draft one in the first round. Luckily in the second round that second tier of tackles was still around.

Wisoncin’s Michael Deiter was the best of the bunch. One of four former Badgers offensive lineman who should be draft, Deiter is the most versatile. A long time starter who’s played center and both tackle positoins, he offers versatility to any line he joins in the NFL. He’s a very good athlete who plays with impressive leverage. His lack of length may get teams to force him inside. At tackle he is quick enough to negate that lack of length and that is where he should get a first shot in the NFL.

Los Angeles would be wise to give him a chance to win the right tackle starting spot. The current right tackle Tevi, also lacks length. He is not the athlete or forceful player that Deiter can be. With the age of Phillip Rivers, surrounding him with protection is important. This is a team that can compete right away. An experienced, versatile offensive lineman would go a long way in helping them achieve their goals.
