Round 3 – Pick 69

David Montgomery, RB, Iowa State

A big reason for Jacksonville’s offensive struggles last year was the health of Leonard Fournette. The top-picked running back two years ago looks to be injury-prone as he enters his third season. The Jaguars were not able to withstand that injury because T.J. Yeldon was not an every-down back. It got to the point where they traded their 2019 fifth-round draft pick for Carlos Hyde, who was only with the team for eight games before being released. In the end, the team needs to add a running back. In this down year for the position, it must come earlier than later.

Iowa State’s David Montgomery would be an excellent choice to pair with Fournette. He may not be the fastest back in the draft but he offers excellent burst at the second level, insane contact balance and a competitive spirit that turns two-yard runs into 10. He has shown the ability to be a great third-down option with catching the ball one of his strengths, as well as being a fantastic pass blocker.

Now that Yeldon and Hyde are both gone, that leaves Thomas Rawls as the backup. An injury-prone Fournette, already upset with the team at times throughout his young career, needs a better understudy. Montgomery gives them a player that can be an every-down back but also compliment their former first-round draft pick. It was not too long ago that Montgomery himself was getting first-round buzz.
