Round 4 – Pick 109

Will Grier, QB, West Virginia

If there is a mid-round quarterback the Jaguars could like it would be West Virginia’s Will Grier. He is an experienced player who has high-level production. That is the formula that Coughline seems to employ when evaluating quarterbacks. Grier is getting a lot of love of late and may be taken well before this. For Jacksonville, in this mock, it makes a ton of sense should he still be there in Round 4.

Grier may not be pro-ready, so drafting him here allows the team to groom him behind Nick Foles. Foles signed a big deal but there are options for them to get out of it after two seasons. That would be the sweet spot for Grier to take over.

Grier’s knocks are size-related and the fact he is a gambler with the ball. Even with those two things going against him, there is enough about him that teams will like. Grier is an effortless mover in the pocket and excels playing off script. He has a short and compact motion that lends to his lightning-quick release and allows him throw the ball accurately when his base is set. He’s solid against pressure as well, though it is something he rarely faced in the Big 12’s no-defense conference.

Even if the Jaguars only want him as a backup, Grier is already better than Cody Kessler or Tanner Lee, the two current backups for Foles. Jacksonville is not going to reach on a quarterback, but this is a class where they will explore bringing one in around this point. Grier makes sense, as does Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham, given Coughlin’s track record.
