NFL Draft 2019: Jacksonville Jaguars full NFL mock draft
By Joe Romano
Round 5 – No Pick
This pick was given to the Cleveland Browns in trade for Carlos Hyde. In hindsight, with Hyde no longer on the roster, this was a bad move. Giving up capital, especially at a position that they already had three players working well, was a mistake. Not having a fifth-round pick is not the end of the world but this is a spot where they could have gotten a player to contribute.
Round 6 – Pick 178
Sheldrick Redwine, S, Miami
Safety is a sneaky need for the Jaguars. Releasing Tashaun Gipson left a massive hole on the back end. Last year’s third-round pick from Alabama, Ronnie Harriso, will step into the starting strong safety. He’s being joined by Jarrod Wilson, a former undrafted free agent.
Bringing in Sheldrick Redwine from Miami is a smart decision. He is not the best free safety in the draft, but at this point in Round 6 there are not many left. He can join Harrison and provide enough for Jacksonville to run cover-two. With Jacksonville, he could also come down into the slot corner role, where he excels in man coverage and playing against bigger slot receivers. Redwine is an elite athlete and offers coverage skills that most safeties do not. This would be a steal for a player who is underrated in this class.
Round 7 – Pick 236
Tommy Sweeney, TE, Boston College
Waiting on a tight end paid off for Jacksonville in this mock draft. Boston College’s Tommy Sweeney is a player that fits the mold for a team that still wants to run the ball a lot. Sweeney is a great blocker. He may not be a seam-stretcher like most modern NFL tight ends but that is not Jacksonville’s offense.
Instead Sweeney is like a sixth offensive lineman who can make some solid grabs in the short area and help keep the offense on schedule. Geoff Swain is scheduled to be the team’s starter. Sweeney could step in as the second tight end and may even outplay Swain as the season progresses.
