Round 1 – Pick 11

Drew Lock, QB, Missouri

The Cincinnati Bengals are a tough team to predict in the NFL draft.  With a new young head coach, especially one coming from a QB coach background, there is a good chance he is going to want his own guy. We’ve seen it time and time again throughout the NFL. Zach Taylor, the team’s new coach, should be no different. He was brought in to give this offense a boost and should be able to with the skill position players on the team.

Drew Lock from Missouri would be a great player to facilitate those skill players. Lock is a long-time starter for the Tigers coming from playing the toughest defenses in the nation in the Big 12. His underwhelming pro day aside, he may have the best arm in the class overall. It’s a big powerful arm but Lock has shown an ability to put touch on his balls. His accuracy comes and goes but when he is on and firing on all cylinders, he looks like a franchise QB.

There are concerns regarding Lock, like all the quarterbacks in this class. He was prone to poor decisions earlier in his career, and cleaned that up this past season. He still struggles with pressure as well. The biggest problem is that when facing pressure, and forced to adjust his feet, his mechanics fail him. Lock has a tendency, like most big arm quarterbacks to let his arm talent get him in trouble. Taylor is the type of coach that can maximize his physical gifts.

Long time starter Andy Dalton can mentor Lock for a season. After which Dalton be let go with zero dead money on the cap. This gives Cincinnati a leg up at the quarterback position. The do not want to wait until 2020 and compete with teams like the Dolphins and Giants who are going to be in the hunt. Not to mention any other team that can jump in the mix.

If LSU linebacker Devin White gone, which he was here, Lock seems like a great option. Bringing back tight ends Tyler Eifert, and C.J. Uzomah takes them out of the running to grab T.J. Hockenson. The only other position they could target would be offensive tackle.
