Round 3 – Pick 99

Ben Banogu, EDGE, TCU

It is no surprise to see the Rams try to secure some edge pass rush help in free agency. Dante Fowler and Clay Matthews are highly-touted edge players. Fowler is not as productive as many believe he should be but still provides someone the offense has to account for. He is also on a one-year deal  Matthews is much more of an inside player at this point of his career but again makes offenses account for him at all times. Los Angeles needs a guy to groom behind both these players.

At this stage in the draft some of the Rams needs line up with the players available without reaching. A good pairing of that is Ben Banogu from TCU. The excellent edge defender would give the Rams a much needed boost off the edge to help free up their talented interior.

Banogu is an extremely explosive athlete in testing but his tape does not scream that when you watch him play. His high motor led to a ton of production for the Horned Frogs in the Big 12. Banogu is also a more refined technical prospect than he gets credit for. His ability to win in a variety of ways will make him a tough task for offensive tackles. He is a bit undersized with shorter arms so he will need every bit of that technique to win in the NFL.

This odd front defense is an ideal fitting for an edge rusher who barely hits 250 pounds. In this defense he would start as a situational outside rusher and potentially grow into more to replace Fowler in 2020.
