Viewers were not aware WrestleMania 27 would be the final match of Edge’s career until the following night. Edge opened the show defending SmackDown’s World Championship belt against Royal Rumble winner Alberto Del Rio. The match featured Christian at ringside in Edge’s corner. Many fans expected Christian to turn heel on his best friend to start a feud between the two, but Edge instead won cleanly.
The match did a good job opening the show and was arguably the best on the card. Edge secured the feel-good win to put the fans in a great mood to kick off the event. The following night on Raw featured the crushing news of Edge retiring due to his neck injury.
