Round 1 – Pick 6

Jawaan Taylor, T, Florida

Part of David Gettleman’s plan is fixing an offensive line that has been a sore spot in New York for years. They’ve got three players currently entrenched as starters. Nate Solder was the NFL’s highest paid offensive tackle last year. PFF graded him about league average with some flashes of high-end production. At guard, Will Hernandez enters his second year after an average rookie campaign and Kevin Zeitler comes over from the Browns as one of the NFL’s best at the position. They are still lacking at the other tackle spot and the center position.

That is why Florida’s Jawaan Taylor is looking like a Gettleman type pick with the Giants’ sixth pick in the draft. Coming from the Gators, Taylor played right tackle. That would be where he slots in for the Giants. Taylor is a solid all-around prospect as tackle but would give the Giants an excellent pass blocker at right tackle with the size to move bodies in the run game. He’s the draft’s best overall tackle.

Even with those excellent traits and play style, he’s got some issues to work on. He’s a naturally high leverage player. Increasing his mobility would allow him to sit back more in his pass sets and play with leverage better in the run game.

In this mock draft Dwayne Haskins was selected already. Even with Kyler Murray on the board, Gettleman would likely pass. Murray does not fit in with his old school mentality and what he expects from the position. One thing is clear this offseason, Gettleman knows what he wants and likes and will not dictate from that regardless of talent.
