Round 3 – Pick 95

Sean Bunting, CB, Central Michigan

As it stands the New York Giants may have the worst collection of cornerbacks in the NFL. The top of their depth chart features an aging and declining Janoris Jenkins partnered with unproven supplemental draft pick Sam Beal coming off a season ending shoulder injury. While Beal has potential an eventual replacement for Jenkins needs to be addressed.

Like pass rusher, this is not a position Gettleman has valued in the past. From his time in Carolina where he unexpectedly and without reason, pulled an offer to Josh Norman and let him walk. He left holes throughout the Panthers secondary with his refusal to address the position. That can’t happen in New York.

Sean Bunting is a rising prospect that would be an excellent addition to the Giants defense. The Central Michigan product is an aggressive, albeit raw, corner prospect. He’s got plus athleticism and length that can allow him to play in any style of defense. Right now his best trait is his read and react ability in zone coverage. He profiles as someone who can grow into a bigger role with time.

New York needs youth in their secondary. Pairing Bunting with Beal long term gives the team a pair of raw prospects who have the traits to be fantastic in the future. Neither is a sure thing but the depth chart is so void of talent in one of the game’s most crucial position that doesn’t matter. Jenkins is a great mentor for both with his physical style and history of success. His contract expires in two years, giving the team enough time to work Bunting and Beal into more prominent roles.
