3. The Red Sox slumber

The simple reality for the Yankees is that they’ll need to dethrone their arch rivals to win the World Series in 2019. Fortunately for fans in New York, the Red Sox didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory this offseason.

In fairness, Boston returns most of the players that helped them win the World Series last season. Their offense should still be electric in 2019. Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez and company aren’t going to forget how to hit this season.

That doesn’t mean the Red Sox improved their roster this winter. In fact, they went backwards in one key area. There are real questions about whether or not Boston’s bullpen is good enough to win them another championship.

Joe Kelly left Beantown early in free agency and Craig Kimbrel is still out there twisting in the free agency wind. Assuming he doesn’t come back to Boston, the team’s bullpen is going to enter the season with a lot of questions to answer. A shaky bullpen isn’t a recipe for success for the Red Sox if they expect to top the Yankees in 2019.
