1. T.J. Hockenson

The best thing the Bills can do for Allen next season is to give him a safety blanket. He desperately needs a player he can throw the ball to when the pressure starts to close in. That doesn’t have to be a wide receiver. In fact, the role is best filled by a quality tight end.

Fortunately for the Bills, T.J. Hockenson’s position in this draft class lines up nicely with their first-round pick. It could be a terrific example of where need and the best prospect available intersect. Most draft experts have him pegged somewhere near the No. 10-overall selection.

The Bills would be smart to snap him up at No. 9. Adding a 6-foot-5, 250 tight end who is capable of making plays as a slot receiver would drastically change the ceiling of the Buffalo offense. Tyler Kroft is a nice tight end, but Hockenson is a guy who can develop into a Pro Bowler in a few years.

Don’t forget, Hockenson also has the size to contribute as a run-blocker for the Bills offense as well. That’s still going to be a huge piece of McDermott’s offense next season. Finding a player who can contribute to both phases of the attack would be ideal for the Bills. Hockenson is the perfect player to help Allen take the next step in his development.
