5 matches that should have been the main event of WrestleMania
4. WrestleMania 27 Dream Main Event: Undertaker vs Triple H in a No Holds Barred Match
Actual Main Event — The Miz vs John Cena for the WWE Championship
This would have been an example of the last match not necessarily having the biggest stakes attached to it or even a title on the line, but the Undertaker vs Triple H didn’t need those things to have a great match. These two bring out the best in each other and their matches have been brutal by the new WWE standards. This match itself led to a rematch the next year because while Taker ran his streak to 19-0, he wasn’t able to leave the ring area under his own power. The Game knew he was oh-so-close to defeating the Streak. After 30 minutes of back and forth, it would have been an interesting cliffhanger to close WrestleMania. They could have used it for the following year, much like John Cena and The Rock down the line. It’s hard to say that any fan would have been upset with this as a main event.
The same cannot be said for the actual main event. Both wrestlers were likely injured at some point during the bout and the crowd wasn’t into it from the word go. They had nothing but apathy towards The Miz, who had yet to really cement himself as one of the top dogs in the company. That’s not the case anymore, but eight years is a long time. Cena was getting the “John Cena Sucks” treatment and when both men were counted out, The Rock (who was the host of WrestleMania) came out. At this point, Raw still had a computer-based “Anonymous General Manager” who would chime in and someone would have to read the laptop for instructions. The Rock started to read it and then decided to restart the match on his own, because, apparently, he can do that. Who knows.
After the match restarted, the Rock then proceeded to give Cena a Rock Bottom and Miz got the win. That doesn’t exactly help The Miz get over, and neither did the Rock attacking him post-match either. When the show ends with the host trashing both main event participants and posing on the ropes, there’s a good chance something went wrong in the process.
