3. Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have signed Bashaud Breeland, and he’s probably stepping in as a primary perimeter corner. Kendall Fuller is a keeper, but he’s a slot corner. The immediate rest of Kansas City’s depth chart at cornerback consists of Charvarius Ward, Tremon Smith and D’Montre Wade. It’s ok if that trio doesn’t inspire you.

Kansas City was once as cap-strapped as any team around. But the release of Justin Houston and the tag and trade of Dee Ford has helped put them close to $23 million in cap space right now.

As currently constructed, before they have to give Patrick Mahomes a contract that will almost surely reset the top of the quarterback market, the Chiefs have a short window to win. Rhodes has four years left on his contract, but the dead money attached to him diminishes quickly after 2019.

So trading for Rhodes can be considered something of a win-now move, for a Kansas City team that’s trying to take the next step after reaching the AFC Championship Game last year. The question is if they have the assets to get the Vikings’ attention.
