Key Additions: LB Thomas Davis, QB Tyrod Taylor

Key Departures: WR Tyrell Williams, CB Jason Verrett, DT Corey Liuget, S Jahleel Addae

Grade: C+

There really isn’t much to say about the Los Angeles Chargers performance in free agency this season, because they didn’t sign any difference-makers. That said, Tyrod Taylor was probably the best backup the Chargers could have hoped to sign behind star quarterback Philip Rivers, and Thomas Davis can still play even at the age of 36.

The Chargers were able to re-sign star inside linebacker Denzel Perryman, so it could be exciting to watch how he and Davis work together with the stellar Derwin James “behind” them as an all-action safety.

Though the Chargers lost a few notable names in free agency, they were never expected to keep any of those contributors. Corey Liuget is a shell of himself, Jason Verrett is a legit superstar when healthy but good health has been difficult to come by, and Tyrell Williams was simply too expensive for the Chargers to keep. After all, the Chargers already have an elite wide receiver duo in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, both of whom are more consistent than Tyrell Williams.

After finishing 12-4 last season, the Chargers are still in a position to make a deep playoff run, and they shouldn’t be slept on as possible Super Bowl contenders. They didn’t need to rock the boat this offseason, because they have the right core of players and just need to keep building on what they have via the draft.
