Los Angeles Rams

Key Additions: FS Eric Weddle, OLB Clay Matthews, QB Blake Bortles

Key Departures: S Lamarcus Joyner, OG Rodger Saffold, DT Ndamukong Suh, ILB Mark Barron

Grade: C

The Los Angeles Rams were always expected to lose a few standouts in free agency this year, and that’s exactly what happened with Lamarcus Joyner and Rodger Saffold signing lucrative contracts with the Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Titans, respectively. Neither man has joined a team that can realistically hurt the Rams in 2019, so that has to be a net win for the Rams, who were never in the running to re-sign either high-priced impending free agent.

Their other big-name free agent, Ndamukong Suh, is still available, and it isn’t out of the question for him to circle back to the Rams after failing to get the interest he desired. Mark Barron’s departure is hardly noteworthy to the Rams, as he was arguably the defense’s weak link last year.

It will be interesting to see how Clay Matthews fits the defense and how much he has left to give. Both he and Eric Weddle could give the Rams an important veteran boost, and Weddle’s ability to contribute certainly won’t be called into question after he put together yet another impeccable season for the Baltimore Ravens in 2018. The Rams secondary should be fine with Weddle patrolling at safety.

And who can forget Blake Bortles? Perhaps if he shows up well in the preseason, he’ll have an offensive coordinator gig lined up after working with Sean McVay with a clipboard in hand.
