5. AJ Styles

Finally, we have someone who still has the potential to actually main-event a WrestleMania in the future: Former WWE Champion, AJ Styles. This year, Styles heads to WrestleMania for a match against Randy Orton. While this should be a great match if given proper time, it’s nowhere close to being considered the main event of the show.

Many think Styles should have been in the main event last year against Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship. Instead, they closed with a match that arguably no one wanted to see to begin with between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Not only did some fans get up and leave as the match started, but the WWE also had Lesnar retain not giving the WWE Universe that feel-good moment that the company claims it tries to give their fan base every year at the conclusion of its biggest show.

In fact, it took until WrestleMania 2000 (No. 16) to see a heel close out the show as the champion. So to have Lesnar leave with the championship instead of allowing Styles to close the show by retaining over Nakamura didn’t make a whole lot of sense.

WWE didn’t need to do a Nakamura heel-turn there either, had the match main evented the show. They could have done it the following Tuesday on SmackDown Live and it wouldn’t have made a bit of difference, allowing the WrestleMania crowd to go home happy.
