Carolina Panthers full 2019 NFL mock draft
Round 5: David Sills
Most Panthers fans were happy to see Devin Funchess leave in free agency, but it does leave Newton without a big wide receiver to target in the red zone. Sills has his faults, but he is a big target who can make catches in traffic. That’s enough to make him good value in Round 5.
Some teams don’t like Sills because he lacks top-end speed. It’s fair to wonder whether or not he can separate from NFL defensive backs. That’s less important in the red zone though. He’s a legitimate 6-foot-5 receiver who can go up and make plays on balls in the air. At worst Sills will be a valuable specialist, at best, he can be an average starter at wide receiver.
Round 6: Clayton Thorson
The Panthers spent some time with the former Northwestern star before his Pro Day which is a clear signal of their interest in him. Obviously they aren’t shopping for Newton’s replacement, but Thorson could grow into a quality backup in time.
Thorson doesn’t have great arm talent, but he does move around the field really well for a guy his size. If the Panthers can help him improve his accuracy, he could become a valuable insurance policy in case Newton is forced to miss game time.
