MLB rumors: 5 prospects who can help Yankees in 2019
2. Michael King
King is another player who really divides opinion among scouts. Those who support him point to his terrific numbers in the minors as evidence that he’s ready for major league action. His critics correctly point out that he doesn’t have a great deal of arm talent to work with. King relies much more on location and guile than electric stuff.
MLB.com splits the difference and puts King at No. 22 on their list of Top 30 Yankees prospects. That’s a clear nod to the fact that he posted an ERA of just 1.79 in his 25 minor league appearances across three different levels last year. No one can argue with what King did on the mound.
Unfortunately, an ill-timed injury prevented him from being involved in Spring Training for the Yankees. That cost him any slight chance he had to break camp with the big league club. Still, if he continues to dominate hitters in AAA he’s going to get a long look for GM Brian Cashman and the rest of the Yankees brass.
King won’t be the first pitcher called up if a starter goes down to injury or ineffectiveness, but he might be second on the list. That means it’s very likely he’ll get a shot for the Yankees at some point this season.
