Round 3 – Pick 67

Terry McLaurin, WR, Ohio State

After the secondary, the skill positions have been a point of emphasis for John Lynch and the 49ers front office. The receiver group is made up of players that bring a unique skill to the position. Marquise Goodwin is a speed receiver on the outside who can take any snap the distance. Newly acquired Jordan Matthews gives them an over the middle, chain moving threat.

Young Dante Pettis is an electric after the catch player who has a ton of upside. Fellow youngster Trent Taylor has the traits of an elite slot player and can become that in time. This is a group that needs another addition.

Staying in the Big 10, and looking back to the Buckeyes, the rising Terry McLaurin makes a ton of sense for this offense. McLaurin is unlike the rest of this group of receivers, as he is a diverse player that does not have a single trait that makes him great. Perhaps his best asset is his route running which makes him a perfect piece to an offense like this where they do not need a world beating top option.

McLaurin has been rising up boards throughout the draft process. His production at Ohio State was nice but that wacky offense is tough to translate. However an excellent Senior Bowl and even better combine have his stock sky high. Mel Kiper recently mocked him in the first round. That is a little too lofty but in the top part of round three, he would be a steal. McLaurin is a high floor prospect who can help this team immediately and has a role on special teams. That is a fantastic addition for any team and a perfect fit for San Francisco.
