Round 5 – No Pick

The 49ers traded this pick to the Detroit Lions in exchange for guard Laken Tomlinson who should lock-down a starting spot for the team next season.

Round 6 – Pick 176

Will Harris, S, Boston College

The safety position is interesting in San Francisco. Jaquiski Tartt is solid as the strong safety. How much does the team trust former seventh round pick Adrian Colbert? He was excellent as a rookie but had a sophomore slump last year. Third safety/nickle defender Jimmie Ward has a role that he fills very well. It would not surprise me to see them bring in competition for Colbert in the later rounds.

Will Harris is that type of player. A veteran of a talented Eagles secondary, Harris projects as the last line of defense type of safety. He’s versatile enough to play in the box and run tight ends up the seam. Still where he is at his best is with the plays in front of him and being able to make stops preventing big plays. An exceptional athlete with great size Harris could push Colbert for playing time of be a replacement for Ward who is entering the final year of his deal.

Round 6 – Pick 212

Hjalte Froholdt, IOL, Arkansas

Weston Richburg was a free agent signing a year ago to lock down the center position. The acquisition of Laken Tomlinson secures one guard spot. It would make sense for former first round pick Josh Garnett to man the other. However he has struggled and is currently second on the depth chart to veteran journeyman Mike Person. There needs to be an addition here at some point in the draft.

Hjalte Froholdt has a tough name but does not play like the tough Vikings that came before him. He is a short armed guard who offers upside because of his athleticism. He offers versatility with his ability to play guard or center.  His athleticism is what makes him a fit for Shanahan’s offense where interior offensive lineman need to move horizontally to the line of scrimmage. Froholdt is a bit of a shot in the dark but a bet that a team is going to be willing to make given his frame and athleticism.

Round 7 – No Pick

The 49ers traded this pick to the Cleveland Browns for swing tackle Shon Coleman prior to last season.
