Round 3 – Pick 65

Dawson Knox, TE, Ole Miss

This next pick will depend a lot on how you feel about Ricky Seals-Jones as the long term tight end for the Arizona Cardinals. Right now Seals-Jones is an intriguing player but does not look to be an option for the future, especially considering he is a restricted free agent after the season. Charles Clay was brought in from Buffalo and offers a veteran presence. He also offers the likelihood that he will get injured for a good chunk of the season going off his track record.

The tight end position was unique during Kingsbury’s time at Texas Tech. It was a mix of traditional full backs flexed to the line of scrimmage and bigger receviers labeled tight ends. He treats it as a match-up spot to win on the middle part of the field. That is where the position is headed across the NFL and it would be smart for the Cardinals to find a player with a skill set to match what he is looking for.

That player is Ole Miss’ Dawson Knox. Coming to the NFL with limited production (that’s an understatement), Knox is a fascinating prospect. He’s got all the traits to be an impact move tight end in the NFL. His top end speed and change of direction skills are rare for a guy that size. He needs to work on his route tree but there were too many mouths to feed in the Rebels offense to pin his lack of production solely on him.

When asked to contribute he did and made the best of it. For Arizona he’d be a seam stretching option and safety blanket for Kyler Murray while growing into a more traditional tight end role if that is what is asked of him.
