5. Carsen Edwards’ show gets canceled at the buzzer

The NCAA Tournament often creates magic moments for previously unheralded players, and Purdue’s Carsen Edwards certainly fit the bill this season. Edwards was by far the best scorer on a Purdue team that lost four starters from last year’s Sweet 16 team, but few expected the Boilermakers to go on a deep March run.

No one gave that memo to Edwards, who put the Boilermakers on his back throughout the tournament. After scoring 26 points in Purdue’s first round win over Old Dominion, Edwards poured in another 42 to help the Boilermakers bury the defending national champions to earn a place in the Sweet 16.

The regional brought more of a spotlight for Edwards, who continued his torrid March with a 29 point effort to help Purdue knock out Tennessee. That set the stage for a showdown between Purdue and Virginia with a trip to the Final Four on the line.

Virginia was expected to slow down the Boilermakers with their tenacious Pack Line defense, but no one told Edwards. Edwards took control of the game from the jump, scoring 42 points on 14-25 shooting, including a ridiculous 10-19 from beyond the arc.

Unfortunately for the Boilermakers, the Cavaliers tied the game in the final seconds on a buzzer-beating shot from Mamadi Diakite. Virginia went on to win the game in overtime, spoiling an all-time great March showing from Edwards.
